Kirkwood Season Recap

Another winter season is in the books here in Lake Tahoe. It was a fun winter working with the Kirkwood Mountain Resort marketing team shooting “The Dispatch”, a weekly video series. The winter season had a slow start and the region had unseasonably warm weather.

However, good old mother nature decided to show up in February and “Miracle March” and dropped over 200 inches of snow. The snow was gladly welcomed by everyone.

Shooting in the mountains is always a challenge and shooting at Kirkwood is no exception. It’s hard to get those perfect days when the snow and lighting are both good. It was really exciting to have a few almost perfect days to capture this year. Really happy with some of the footage I captured this season.

“Home” – Nikon USA

It was an honor to edit this short film by my friend Corey Rich. Corey is a director, photographer and a Nikon Camera Ambassador. Nikon approached Corey to shoot a short film on the newly released Nikon d850 camera. After being around the world on assignment for over 3 months, Corey was looking for a way to shoot something without traveling.

He pitched the concept to shoot his family and everyday moments at home. This short film was shot on the Nikon d850 with one lens and all handheld. No fancy equipment or crew. The idea was to give the footage a home movie look or feel. The simplicity of the footage really makes this a special piece and it’s great reminder of the little things in life. For the edit, I also kept it simple. I had hours of footage to watch, trying to find the best moments. Corey and I rerecorded the voice over a few times to make it work perfectly with the footage. I also used natural audio when times were right. Overall a fun project to work on, pumped on the finished video.

Mountain Modern Series

My good friend and fellow video shooter John Considine and myself were hired to shoot a series of promotional videos for Heavenly Mountain Resort and Vail Resorts. We worked closely with the marketing and sales team to come up with an interesting way to tell the stories of three new boutique hotels in South Lake Tahoe. The concept was to give a hosted tour of each hotel, highlighting what makes them unique.

We wanted to give these an organic feel and keep the tour moving through all the different amenities of each place. To give this effect we used a handheld gimbal to stabilize the camera and keep the footage nice and smooth. We followed the host walking through the hotel and then we went back and shot b-roll of each location. For this shoot we used 2 Sony a7s cameras, a 10 foot camera crane and a Kessler slider to keep the footage looking interesting. Check out the finished edits I put together below.
