Sitting at the base of Cathedral ridge and on the shores of Fallen Leaf Lake is Standford Sierra Conference Center. Standford Camps history dates back to 1846 and in 1925 John Steinbeck spent a summer working at camp. For the past three summers I’ve worked with the Marketing Director to produce/shoot/edit informational web videos for the camp.

Stanford Camp from Angora Ridge

These videos are used to promote activities in the area and give the guest some information before they arrive at camp. New this summer to camp is an interactive hiking trail map, which allows guest to research the variety of hiking trails in the area. The interactive map is very well done, complete with a huge touch screen monitor.

For this video, we really wanted to show the scenic beauty of the area and give the guest a little overview of the new interactive map. We used Morgan on camera as the spoke person for the camp, he is an avid hiker and also helped put together the new interactive map. After shooting the interview with Morgan, I began collecting scenic B-Roll of the area. I used both a 5dmkIII and my Dji Phantom 2 with a GoPro Hero 3+ to get both ground and Aerial footage.

It’s always a pleasure to work with the fun staff out at camp, for more information check out their website.

This past week I had the opportunity to shoot some interviews for “UFC’s Top 5 Greatest Fights”, an hour long TV show to air Fox Sports 1. The assignment was to light, shoot and record audio of various UFC fighters for the show. I loaded up my gear and headed down to Ultimate Fitness in Sacramento California, home of UFC’s Team Alpha Male. I was given very specific details for the look and framing of the interviews. It was crucial that all the different interviews throughout the show keep a consistent look and feel. After meeting up with Graeme Smith one of the shows producers, I began setting up for the interview in a medium sized conference room. We interviewed bantamweight/featherweight fighter Urijah Faber and featherweight star Chad Mendes, who’s fight is featured on the show.

For the interviews, I shot on a Canon 5dmkiii with a 70-200L 2.8is lens, wide open at f2.8 and at 135mm focal length. This camera/lens combo worked perfect to create very shallow depth of field and keep the background design interesting. For audio, I recorded 2 channels of audio to a Zoom h4n recorder. I put a Sennheiser G3 wireless microphone on the talent and used a me66 Sennheiser shotgun microphone attached to a boom pole on a stand.

Below is a diagram of the interview/lighting setup, screen grabs of the final interviews and the equipment used.

The Rahlves Banzai Tour is the brainchild of Daron Rahlves the most decorated ski racer in US Ski Team history. The Banzai tour takes place in Lake Tahoe, at three different ski resorts, Squaw Valley, Kirkwood and Sugar bowl. The Banzai tour is one of the most unique forms of ski racing I have ever witnessed. It reminds me of downhill ski racing, a mix of motocross and big mountain skiing. It’s a very true form of racing, four people head-to-head, the fastest person to the bottom wins. The course is all natural terrain, this isn’t a perfectly groomed race course or manicured park jump. This event also brings skiers and riders from all different forms and disciplines of skiing and competition.

About two weeks before the Kirkwood stop of the Banzai Tour, Daron, Coop (Kirkwood Resort) and myself went out to scout the course. On this day…the conditions on the “Wall” were down right scary. Hard, VERY HARD conditions, think ice skating rink and step pitch. It was tough to even keep my tripod from sliding away, while trying to keep myself edged into the side of the mountain. Then here comes Daron, made it look like packed powder! Interesting day I’ll probably always remember. Here’s a little video I shot and edited from the scout day with Daron.

The conditions on race day improved from the scout day, however, it was still a very firm and fast race course. Sean Davis and myself set out to capture the action, spirit and essence of the event. We started shooting from the top of the course and worked our way down to the bottom to capture the final races from the finish line. As always, events are fast paced production and sometimes stressful. We were constantly on the move to get as many angles and sections of the course as we could. Overall it was a really fun event to capture, check out the highlights below.
