12/08/09 @ Heavenly

The first large storm of the season rolls through the Lake Tahoe area. Heavenly gets 2 ½ feet of snow in the past 48 hours. With the passing of the storm I headed out to film the fresh new snow. Picture perfect day. Once again thanks to my models for helping me grab some amazing footage.
The famous four hour special, 2 hour shoot, 2 hour edit, post to the web.
One of my personally favorites so far this year.
enjoy

The Snowmakers 3

By far one of the most challenging shoots I’ve been on. I give the snowmakers a lot of credit, because their job is tough and demanding. Dane Henry and I headed up the mountain with the swing crew at 7:00 pm. By snowmobile escort we captured the crew moving guns and setting up on Ridge Run. The winds picked up around 9:00, and it got cold. Despite all that Mother Nature was throwing at us, it was still a good time.

Dipper Opens

Heavenly’s snowmakers continue to cover more runs with snow. The newest run to open is Big Dipper. I went out with three models early morning and captured them ripping up the new run. Thanks to Amy McCormick, Billy Newmen and Richard Jameson for helping me get some great footage.
This was another beautiful Tahoe blue bird day however it was cold, the temperature was zero degrees during the shoot.

Opening Day

Heavenly’s earliest opening day in years, plus some of the best snow I’ve skied this early. With the hard work of Heavenly’s Snowmakers, Heavenly is the first Ski Resort open in the Lake Tahoe Basin. The video team was in full effect. Dane Henry headed up the hill with three models, and captured some amazing skiing. I stayed down in the village and shot around the gondola. Beautiful morning of filming, a blue bird day, complemented by a light blanket of snow left from overnight.

Snowmakers 2

We just wrapped production on the second episode of “The Snowmakers”, a web series for Heavenly Mountain Resort. Dane Henry and myself headed up the Mountain at 6am to capture the sunrise and start the day of filming with the day crew. After the some coffee and the usual truck ride up the mountain, we were greeted with 20-foot mounds of snow. Truly amazing how much snow they had produced in a couple short days. We were escorted around on snowmobiles to check out the progress on Orion’s run. Another exciting day filming and cruising around the mountain.

Sunrise Timelapse

This short timelapse was taken while filming the second episode of “The Snowmakers”. Dane and I got up on the mountain at 7am to film the sunrise. It was a great morning

Snowmakers 1

Dane Henry and myself just finished shooting the first episode of “The Snowmakers” for Heavenly Mountain Resort. What a treat to be up on the mountain at night, a unique experience. After a 25-minute truck ride up, the night of shooting began at Adventure Peak at the top of the gondola. This a cold spot on the mountain, and usually a starting point for the swing shift. Cold and wet night of shooting, the camera and me are still drying out. Captured on two Panasonic Hvx 200’s.
Here is Dane’s amazing edit.

Fire and Lights

I headed down to my old stomping grounds at Ski Run Marina for a little sunset shoot. When I arrived at the marina, I headed down towards the beach, nothing down there really stuck my fancy. Discouraged I headed back to my truck, as I looked up saw the fire pit. Having spent many summer nights by it, I thought I would do it a little justice. Pulled out my tripod, flipped my camera to 60p and got creative. I conformed all the footage from 60fps to 30fps in cinema tools. Nice effect, happy with the out come.

7 Days with the 7D

Just got the 7D, and I can’t put the camera down, simply amazing design. I wanted to document my first week with the camera, so I hit up all my favorite spots here on the South Shore of Tahoe. Thanks to my roommate for putting up with me and a new camera, some moments she thought she was on the set of real world. Thanks Dawn. This video is a test with the camera playing with different setting, hand held, tripod, etc. This was all shot with the kit lens 28-128mm, which so far has worked well, even though I could use a little more on both ends of the scale.

Footage featured in Ski Film

I was so excited to find out that some of my shots from last ski season of Ty Dayberry are in the new Powder Whore telemark ski film. As I sat watching the premiere of “Flake” at Moe’s Place, I almost jumped out of my seat as mine and Dane’s footage lit up the screen. Over all it is such an honor to be a small part of their movie, these guys are legends in the Telemark film industry. I got to talk to one of the filmmakers after the movie, he was jazzed we supplied him with some footage. Amazing night.
